Projects Launched by
Tehran Parks & Green Space Organization in 2010
· Creating green space along Shahid Chamran-Niayesh Expressway up to Seoul St.
Shahid Chamran is a north-south expressway located in western Tehran. It begins from Parkway Intersection and passing through the localities of Velenjak and Evin extends to the south, then putting behind Shahrak-e Gharb, Vanak, Molla Sadra, Amirabad, Nasr, Shahrara and Sattarkhan ends in Towheed Sq. This expressway crosses Yadegar-e Emam, Niayesh, Shahid Hemmat, Shahid Hakim and Jalal Al-e Ahmad expressways via underpasses in its path. An area as large as 3.4 ha of green space is extended from Niayesh to Seoul. The organization finished creation of this large parcel of green space within 40 days in early 2010. It was one of the heaviest urban green space construction projects. The project was implemented in technical and architectural-green space sections.
Today, with the emergence of environmental movements, holistic approaches to environmental issues, and increased attention to natural elements in urban design, the multifaceted role of greenways in urban environments has been highlighted as live and efficient elements highly influencing living environment qualities. Greenways are rarely considered singularly in modern-day urban design. They are chiefly planned and designed as network of greenways in various local, sectional, regional, urban, suburban and even national levels.

· Green Space around Shahid Bakeri Expressway
Shahid Bakeri is one of the important expressways in western Tehran extending from north to south of capital Tehran. This expressway is located within an area between Shahid Sattari Expressway and Shahid Ayatollah Kashani connecting such important roads and expressways as Niayesh, Shahid Hemmat, Shahid Hakim, Shahid Ayatollah Kashani, Ferdows and Tehran-Karaj Expressway. It is 33 km long whose western and eastern banks serve as the site of the green space project with a length of 1,100 meters between Abshenasan and Shahid Hemmat expressways. A total of 6.6 ha of green space has been created around this expressway. Greenways can be very effective in protection and management of suburban open spaces, city edges and design of satellite towns or residential towns. Moreover, greenways can be used as part of the required substructure for sustainable transportation and urban activities. In addition to biological aspects and roles as ecological corridors in urban structures, greenways can be very helpful in ground water management and flood control, boosting tourist attractions and visual qualities of historical and recreational sites as well as cultural heritages.

· Tree Tagging in Seven Streets and Five Parks
All trees can be identified to some degree by apparent features such as locality, age, etc., but when there is need for detailed information about trees and their health, age, history of disease and the like, these pieces of information cannot be of great help. In the past, trees were identified by the tags or by other marking tools. The ancient or traditional methods of identification cannot help keep data of the health and wellbeing of the trees. In some instances, tags prove to be harmful for the trees and there is high probability of fault in collecting information from these tags. The plan has been implemented in Azadi, Enqelab, Shariati, Shahid Modarres, Shahid Moqaddas Ardebili, Shahid Bahonar, Maleki, and Zaferaniye streets and avenues as well as Shahr, Laleh, Mellat, Azadegan and Goftegoo parks.
A total of 45,000 ID RF nailed tags were used on the trees. These tags were of passive type with life expectancy of 10 years. The project was first prepared and documented on computer and transferred to Excel, Access, etc. for professional processing. Users were trained in a standard manner and the executor of the plan undertook 10 years of hardware support.
· Maintenance and Development of Green Space at Imam Khomeini Complex
Imam Khomeini Complex as large as 70 ha, almost 16 ha of which is green space, is located in the heart of Tehran administrative and commercial center. Because of its historical significance (farewell to Imam Khomeini), citizens want to experience a green and calm place when visiting this place on different occasion (religious festivals and various exhibitions). Therefore, the organization planted various plants, trees, shrubs and seasonal flowers to change the entire complex into a green gem for capital Tehran. Water is pumped for irrigation of the green space from a pond supplied by Modarres Aqueduct.
Green space maintenance operation includes horticultural practices such as irrigation of lawn, trees, shrubs, seasonal flowers, year-round flowers, using herbicides(to remove broad leave grasses in lawn), periodical trimming of lawn and edges by lawnmower, and daily cleaning.
Special Function (Significance): The complex plays a key role in cooling the temperature in central Tehran by serving as a delicate air corridor.
· Green Space of Javadiyeh Overpass
Construction of Javadiyeh Overpass has facilitated traffic at the southern limits of Municipal District 11. It directly links the area to important trade and business centers in the south such as the wholesale shops in Anbar-e Naft and Robat Karim streets, motorbike and bicycle shops in Molavi St., Razi Sq., etc. It also gives easy access to railway station, Vali-e Asr and Karegar streets that extend deep into the central Tehran. This economically advantageous overpass has boosted economic gains for the citizens since inauguration. The overpass has an effective role in smoothening the traffic from Javadiyeh and Rah Ahan localities to Bahman Sq. and in facilitating traffic in Rah Ahan Sq. and Javadiyeh St. as well as the U-turn in Yadegar-e Emam Expressway. After inauguration of the overpass and its connection to the Yadegar-e Emam Expressway, the traffic load of the municipal districts 11 and 16 will balanced and will be transferred from Haqshenas Square to the south and east. Also unleveled intersections will give easy access to the residential localities and the streets nearby with low traffic namely Be’that, Navvab Safavi, Yadegar-e Emam, Shoush and Zamzam. Driving from one street to another will be possible in lesser time. In order to beautify the view of the overpass, green spaces, trees and shrubs have been created and planted in the middle refuge and body of the overpass to catch the eyes of drivers. Javadiyeh Overpass in the end has been decorated with trees along with its six-meter pass which is as long as one kilometer. In addition to beautification, these trees, shrubs and green areas separate the traffic lanes that assure security and safety of the drivers.
· Maintenance of Green Space at National Defense University
The organization has undertaken maintenance of green space at National Defense University to create a green and delicate environment for the students and staffers. Area: about 12 ha
Completed Tasks till 2010:
The organization managed incessant irrigation, lawn moving, using fertilizers and composts (animal, chemical and organic), pruning of the trees and shrubs, weeding, cutting away dried twigs, transplanting, maintenance of irrigation utilities, etc.
